5 — That time he was watching her when no one else did
Above her and in front of her, that demon water was still spinning, spinning, spinning…
“Jill,” said Adrian, a harsher note in his voice than I’d ever heard before. In fact, I couldn’t recall him ever addressing her by her actual name. “Stop.”
It was all he said, but it was like wave of something went through Jill. She flinched, and the water spirals disappeared, falling away in droplets. “Fine,” she said, looking confused.
There was a moment of awkwardness, and then Eddie said, “We should hurry. We’re going to be pushing curfew.”
Lee and Jill set out to make their shots and soon were laughing and flirting again. Eddie continued watching them in his concerned way. Only Adrian paid any attention to me. He was the only one who really understood what had happened, I realized. His green eyes studied me, with no trace of their usual bitter humour. I wasn’t fooled, through. I knew there had to be some witty quip coming, mocking my reaction.
“Are you okay?” he asked quietly.

Um. I feel like this is supposed to be some glorious moment of understanding, but I don’t see it. He obviously doesn’t realize it’s because of magic—especially since later in the book, Adrian still doesn’t understand Sydney’s so afraid of magic. What he understands, as Sydney notes here, is that she’s deeply shaken by what Jill did. I’m pretty sure that he noticed her fear because he could read her aura, and Adrian’s actually been pretty good at identifying fear, worry, all the dark parts of the aura. What this scene does show is that even when he doesn’t understand, he does see her. It’s a strong contrast to the others in the group, who are wrapped up in each other and dismiss the whole thing afterwards. Notice that it sort of has to be Adrian because everyone here is otherwise occupied, and Sydney has no one else as support—something I’ll talk about later on.
(Food for thought—Eddie would claim that he’s doing his job, but it’s confirmed later in the book that he, uh, admires Jill, and Jill and Lee are obviously wrapped up in each other. They’re all focused on the one they have feelings for. It’s a rather interesting parallel isn’t it that Sydney’s the one Adrian’s focused on, whether he has feelings—yet—or not.)
The most interesting part of the scene in regards to Adrian-Sydney IMO is the way Adrian reacts to what’s happening. Adrian obviously adores Jill (platonically). Yet his worry for Sydney brings out this immediate response, of a degree or type that Jill isn’t used to, and does not understand. He’s not commanding, or merely sharp—he’s harsh. He uses her name. He is entirely serious. His feelings are strong enough, and hostile enough in one way or another, that it bleeds through his bond to Jill, as implied by “a wave of something went through her.” It would be an overly strong reaction for a mere ally or acquaintance. It’s not out of place for someone you care about—he cares about her. (Sydney, being Sydney, isn’t ready to open up and let her insecurities out—yet.)—->’course, I welcome any and all disagreeing opinions about my interpretation.
